After tough negotiations the Red Sox and OF Desmond Jennings have finally agreed to terms on a contract. Jennings will receive a 3yr contract with a club option of a 4th year.
"We considered giving Jennings a 5yr deal but with such a small sample size from him we didn't want to go all in." said GM Richard Chase.
Desmond Jennings has 5yr contract potential but its clear drafting him in round 1 was the most risk Rochester was willing to take on him. This deal will allow the Red Sox of controlling Jennings for 4 years. With his skill set this should be a great deal for the team.
With this signing the Red Sox have completed their contract signings for 2012. They are left without a 5yr player but GM Richard Chase isnt worried about that. "We would like to have a 5yr player but we just didnt pick high enough in the draft to get a player of that caliber. If we are picking at the bottom of the draft that means are team is doing well and we can live with it." said Chase.
Red Sox initially had Ryan Braun going into 2012 but traded him in the offseason. They were also rumored to be interested in Alex Rios in an offseason buy low deal. That deal never came to fruition though. It is possible the Red Sox make a deal for a 5yr guy during the season but its more likely they will look to address that situation next offseason. Of course if things go to plan they will have to find a 5 year player with the last pick of round 1.

Red Sox ink Jhonny Peralta to a 2yr contract
What could be consider a bit of a suprise the Rochester Red Sox agreed to terms with Tigers SS Jhonny Peralta.
"When we drafted Jhonny we were happy to get him but didn't expect to give him a contract. But after taking a look at the potential SS in the 2013 draft this deal makes plenty of sense." said GM Chase.
After that explanation it makes plenty of sense to keep Peralta past 2012. During this years draft it had plenty of SS options so there wont be much to choose from next year. Its also not like Peralta isnt a real good SS. He provides nice consistant power and RBI totals for a SS. Now that the Tigers lineup has more punch to it the numbers could even get better.
In other news the Red Sox and Desmond Jennings have gotten close to an agreement. After talks broke down in the beginning of the week things have picked back up and the two sides are looking to get things done by the end of Saturday.

Rochester Red Sox Agree to Terms with Jesus Montero
A former stud prospect in the Yankees farm sytem, Jesus Montero can rake. His ability to hit has never been a question. His ability to play the catcher position on the other hand is a big question. Currently Montero is a decent UTIL option for the Red Sox. But the team is banking on Montero to get enough game behind the plate to become catcher eligable. If he does become catcher eligable then the Red Sox have a big time bat at the position. Even with the move to Seattle and that offense the Red Sox expect Montero to be a quality hitter. Homerun ceiling is lower but if Ichiro and Ackley can get on base in front of him he should drive in runs.
"Its hard to say this about a former Yankees player but we like Montero." said GM Chase. "This kid is a pure hitter and we expect him to do that over the next 2-3 years. We also feel he will get enough games behind the plate to make this even more worthwhile."
This is the second of three young studs drafted by Rochester in the first four rounds of the 2012 draft. Its clear Rich Chase is looking to establish this team as a contender not only for 2012 but for many years to come.

Red Sox sign Max Scherzer to 2yr Contract
After signing two players late last night the Red Sox were back to work today looking to get another player or two signed. Discussions with Desmond Jennings took up most of the day and so far nothing has been able to get done. But once talks broke down the Red Sox turned their attention to another player, Detroit SP Max Scherzer.
"Max is a young talented arm who we feel is about to hit his prime." said GM Chase. "We feel with the lineup Detroit has Max has 18-20 win potential. We also feel his ERA and WHIP will improve as his control continues to improve."
With the signing of Scherzer and likely extension of Dan Haren this gives the Red Sox a very strong top four of the rotation for the next two years. With that being sealed up you can expect the Red Sox to look at hitting early and often during next years draft. "We are obviously focusing on winning this year with the roster we have but you can never prepare too soon for the future either." said Chase. No truer words have ever been spoken.

Red Sox announce first two contracts of 2012
After a unique draft where the Red Sox drafted some players with risk the only question was who will get contracts for this teams future. After a night of negotiations the Red Sox can finally reveal two players that signed.
"Even though there is still time before opening day we wanted to start getting players signed to contracts." said Owner/GM Richard Chase. "The discussions tonight went very easy and we feel the players getting the contracts and the length of the deals are no brainers."
The Rochester Red Sox are pleased to announce 1B Paul Goldschmidt has been signed to a 3yr contract. "Goldie is the power hitting 1B we wanted going into the draft and we were very happy to get him in round 3. We feel he will be a 30+ HR 100RBI guy for us and those numbers deserve this deal." said Chase.
The Rochester Redsox would also like to announce SP Josh Johnson has been inked to a new 2yr contract. "Many people wonder if Josh Johnson can stay healthy and take the ball 30 times a year. Though we have some concern as an organization we feel Josh has such great talent this deal is well worth it." said Chase.
As Opening Day approaches we fully expect to get more announcements on contract signings. Discussions are on going and word out of the organization has the Red Sox signing four more players before the deadline. More news to follow in the coming days.

Red Sox welcome Josh Johnson and Paul Goldschmidt
After reaching a little to take the young and talented Desmond Jennings in round 1 the Rochester Red Sox gamble a little more. Taking Josh Johnson at 2.14 and Paul Goldschmidt at 3.7. It was rumored the Red Sox wanted to move up in round 2 to ensure they got Johnson but the move proved to be unnecessary. While Josh Johnson is a top tier pitcher talent wise his injury history concerns most. Those concerns were not enough for Owner/GM Rich Chase to pass up on him. "We had JJ as our #1 SP on the board. He is still young and about to hit his prime. Yes he has had injury issues in the past but with a talent like him we think its worth the risk. We got a first round talent and a guy we wanted at the end of round 2." said Chase.
In round 3 the Red Sox went with another young unproven talent in Paul Goldschmidt. Last year he showed he has some nice pop as a 1B for the Diamondbacks. At age 24 his upside in the middle of the lineup with Upton & Young is exciting. "Yeah, he is another young kid we are going to count on to immediately help us. He showed in limited action last year he has the pop you like from a first baseman. We think this kid is a cornerstone piece for the next 3-4 years." said Chase.
Its been a very interesting and exciting draft so far for the Red Sox. With the first 3 picks having some risk involved its possible to assume that the team will look to some safer picks for a little while. But with a team as aggressive as the Red Sox it is never safe to assume. They have two 4th round picks coming up and there are still some very talented and helpful players on the board.

With the 14th pick in round 1 of the eMLB draft
The Rochester Red Sox selected Desmond Jennings OF Tampa Bay Rays.
Going with such a young unproven player is not unique for the Owner/GM Rich Chase but to do so in round 1 is. With his first ever draft selection two years ago Chase selected Carlos Gonzalez in round 3. At the time CarGo was a stud in the making but no quite there yet. Chase hopes this selection of Jennings is the same scenario. "We love this kid and are very happy to get him. He has all the tools to produce across the board. In a short time last year he proved he has great skill to perform in the majors." said Chase.
The only question on Jennings is what length of contract will the Red Sox give him. He has all the elite potential to be a 5yr guy but his lack of track record says 3yrs is safer. We will see if Chase and the Red Sox organization go with there usual aggressive decisions or if they will play it safe for once.
