After reaching a little to take the young and talented Desmond Jennings in round 1 the Rochester Red Sox gamble a little more. Taking Josh Johnson at 2.14 and Paul Goldschmidt at 3.7. It was rumored the Red Sox wanted to move up in round 2 to ensure they got Johnson but the move proved to be unnecessary. While Josh Johnson is a top tier pitcher talent wise his injury history concerns most. Those concerns were not enough for Owner/GM Rich Chase to pass up on him. "We had JJ as our #1 SP on the board. He is still young and about to hit his prime. Yes he has had injury issues in the past but with a talent like him we think its worth the risk. We got a first round talent and a guy we wanted at the end of round 2." said Chase.
In round 3 the Red Sox went with another young unproven talent in Paul Goldschmidt. Last year he showed he has some nice pop as a 1B for the Diamondbacks. At age 24 his upside in the middle of the lineup with Upton & Young is exciting. "Yeah, he is another young kid we are going to count on to immediately help us. He showed in limited action last year he has the pop you like from a first baseman. We think this kid is a cornerstone piece for the next 3-4 years." said Chase.
Its been a very interesting and exciting draft so far for the Red Sox. With the first 3 picks having some risk involved its possible to assume that the team will look to some safer picks for a little while. But with a team as aggressive as the Red Sox it is never safe to assume. They have two 4th round picks coming up and there are still some very talented and helpful players on the board.
I like Johnson and Goldschmidt. I also don't mind the stretch for Jennings. Taking him rd 1 was the only way you get him...Hosmer/Jennings/Lawrie was my in order picks for 2.6.
ReplyDeleteYeah I knew I wouldnt get Jennings in round 2. I tried to move down a little but that didnt work. So I just made sure I got my guy even if it meant jumping a little early. I did the same thing last year with Reynolds and that worked out. Hopefully this is the same thing.
